KNUST Distributes 3,300 Laptops to Brilliant, Needy Students Under SONSOL Initiative
Kumasi, August 13, 2025 – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has, since 2021, distributed a total of 3,300 laptops to brilliant but financially disadvantaged students through its flagship Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) project. The investment in digital inclusion has reached a cumulative value of approximately GH¢35 million.
The laptops were awarded during the 2025 distribution ceremony held at the university's Great Hall, where Vice-Chancellor Professor Rita Akosua Dickson reiterated that no student should be barred from participating in modern academic practice due to poverty. “Indeed, the world today, and even more so tomorrow, has little room for digital illiteracy,” she affirmed.
Dr. James Agyenim-Boateng, Managing Director of SIC Insurance PLC, emphasized that providing laptops to needy yet outstanding students served as a powerful enabler of knowledge, innovation, and future success.
Corporate and individual contributions from organizations including SIC Insurance PLC, Telecel Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Omnibsic, and other private benefactors have made the SONSOL initiative possible.
KNUST is a leading tertiary institution in Ghana committed to advancing science and technology education. Through the SONSOL initiative, the university strives to ensure equitable access to educational tools and foster digital literacy among its most deserving students.
